Present-day geodynamics of the Western Alps: new insights from earthquake mechanisms

چکیده
Abstract. Due to the low moderate seismicity of European Western Alps, few focal mechanisms are available in this region day, and corresponding current seismic stress strain fields remain partly elusive. The development dense networks past decades now provides a substantial number records 0–5 magnitude range. data, while challenging handle due their amount relative noise, represent new opportunity increase spatial resolution deformation fields. aim paper is quantitatively assess within from probabilistic standpoint, using seismotectonic data. dataset comprises more than 30 000 earthquakes recorded by between 1989 2013 2200 newly computed consistent manner. global distribution P T axis plunges confirms majority transcurrent entire western Alpine realm, combined with pure extension localized core belt. Present-day uplift of the western Alps
Collisional mountain belts grow as a consequence of continental plate convergence and eventually disappear under the combined effects of gravitational collapse and erosion. Using a decade of GPS data, we show that the western Alps are currently characterized by zero horizontal velocity boundary conditions, offering the opportunity to investigate orogen evolution at the time of cessation of plat...
متن کاملDistribution of present‐day vertical deformation across the Southern Alps, New Zealand, from 10 years of GPS data
[1] We use ten years of GPS data from nine continuous and six semi‐continuous GPS stations in a transect across the Southern Alps to measure rates of relative vertical movement with typical 1s uncertainties of 0.3–0.5 mm/yr. The estimated vertical rates define a fairly smooth profile across the range, with the highest rates of ∼5 mm/yr found near the crest of the mountains and ∼20–30 km southea...
متن کاملthe story of stoechas: from antiquity to the present day
the information about herbs’ medicinal properties is ample in traditional manuscripts, some of which are of value even in modern medicine. however, it is not usually easy to put it into practice. identifying traditional herbs and determining their scientific names are very challenging, calling for many ethnopharmacological studies. one significant herb in traditional medicine is stoechas. its m...
متن کاملPresent-day stress field in the Gibraltar Arc (western Mediterranean)
[1] The Gibraltar Arc in the western Mediterranean consists of the Betic and Rif Alpine chains and the Alboran Sea Basin. Four types of stress indicators (wellbore breakouts, earthquake focal plane mechanisms, young geologic fault slip data, and hydraulic fracture orientations) indicate a regional NW–SE compressive stress field resulting from Africa-Eurasia plate convergence. In some particular...
متن کاملBehavioral ecology of western gorillas: new insights from the field.
The papers in this issue are from a conference held in May 2002 at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. This conference brought together researchers from all current western gorilla sites for the first time with the aim of synthesizing the most current information available on western gorilla behavioral ecology. Our goal was to assess the degree of behavio...
